Normal zone propagation in various REBCO tape architectures

Abstract The normal zone propagation velocity (NZPV) of three families REBCO tape architectures designed for superconducting fault current limiters and to be used in high voltage direct transmission systems has been measured experimentally liquid nitrogen at atmospheric pressure. NZPVs span more than orders magnitude depending on the architectures. Numerical simulations based finite elements allow us reproduce experiments well. dynamic transfer length (CTL) extracted from numerical was found dominating characteristic determining NZPV instead thermal diffusion length. We therefore propose a simple analytical model, whose key parameters are CTL, heat capacity resistive losses metallic layers, calculate NZPV.
